| The Eighty/Ninety series
Founded in 1982 by Catherine and Jean-Luc Flohic, Eighty magazine -
French Painters of the 80s - was immediately noted for its
unconventional
editorial form and its concern for documentary objectivity.
Avoiding fleeting trends and the considerations of the art market, the
magazine is now an essential reference in contemporary art.
The magazine's general quality, the absence of advertising and opportunism
in its pages have established Eighty as a lasting
testimony of the contemporary
plastic arts - the only one of its kind in France.
With a print-run of 4000, the magazine is widely
distributed through mail-order
subscriptions and in bookstores. As a result
,
it has been established as a
durable project for the
arts and has become an essential reference for
collectors, art students,
professors and for all who are curious to learn
about and
understand
contemporary art.
Eighty has succeeded in making contemporary art and the avant-garde
available for the general public and has been behind
numerous exhibitions
of innovative artists, as well as publishing their catalogues.
Eighty - French Painters of the 80s - has moved with the times and become
Ninety - International Art in the 90s.
Each issue features two artists and an intimate look into their work.
The artists collaborate on the issues and select the pieces to
be included
-
in all, 30 full-page reproductions in colour. The series as a whole has
been conceived of as an on-going record of
contemporary art in its constant
development, portraying all the significant art movements of the last two
decades. The two series
(bilingual in the case of Ninety) - with their
international diffusion, their presence in all institutions, contemporary
art libraries, art
schools in France and around the world - form a unique
reference in art today. In addition to the regular issues are two special
issues in book form: Les Peintres d'Europe (European Painters) - the
catalogue for the art show of the same name -, and
Sculpture - which
presents the 20 most important sculptors and installation artists.
